At the heart of New Delhi’s academic and legal district stands the esteemed Vivekananda School of Law & Legal Studies (VIPS-TC). It was here, amidst the beautiful juxtaposition of history and modernity, that we had the privilege of conversing with Dr. Ashu Dhiman. Her reputation as a paragon in the world of law precedes her. But what many might not know, and what’s evident to anyone who has spent time at VIPS, is just how deeply revered she is by her students. Over her career, Dr. Dhiman has been the recipient of numerous accolades, notably a string of “Best Teacher Awards” – a testament to her profound impact on those she mentors.

Serving as an Assistant Professor at VIPS-TC, Dr. Dhiman’s influence isn’t confined to the institution. She’s established herself as a significant force not only in academia but also in the emergent domain of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

As we settled into our conversation, her eyes sparkled with passion. “While I’ve always been deeply invested in Criminal Laws, Business, and Family Laws, it’s the ADR space that truly fascinates me,” she began. “In an era where justice sometimes gets tangled in its own web, ADR provides a streamlined pathway, ensuring that justice is swift and efficient.”

A peek into Dr. Dhiman’s office reveals a treasure trove of knowledge. Shelves lined with books, among them, many penned by her. Her authorial contributions are wide-ranging and impactful. Her book on “Hindu Laws on Divorce” (ISBN 9781638732167) has received widespread acclaim, standing as a testament to her depth of understanding of family law. Venturing into the dynamic world of criminal law, she has edited a thought-provoking volume, “Changing Dimension of Criminal Law” (ISBN 9788195211685). Her dedication to ADR is palpable in her co-edited masterpiece “A Pathway to the Future of ADR” (ISBN 9781639747894). And her exploration into human rights, especially concerning the youth, is evident in “Gen-Z and Human Rights” (ISBN 9798486570643). Another of her seminal works, “Women and Law”, delves into the intricacies of legal challenges faced by women in today’s society.

While Dr. Dhiman’s academic pursuits are evident, she’s also deeply entrenched in the practical realm of law. Her role as the Elected Chief Advisor at MediateGuru’s Global Advisory Board underscores her belief in collaboration. “At MediateGuru, it’s about synergizing diverse skills and steering our associates towards the pinnacle of their potential,” she shared, emphasizing the importance of mentorship. With her at the helm, it’s no surprise that the firm benefits from her vast repository of knowledge and experience.

Furthermore, her commitment to educating the next generation of lawyers shines through at LicitElite’s Law Blog, where she serves as Editor in Chief. “The goal,” she says with a gleam in her eyes, “is to demystify the law, enabling budding legal minds to understand and appreciate its nuances.” Her affiliations span the spectrum of the legal world – from Legality Viability, the Business, Financial, and Technology Law Review, to international bodies like the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. Dr. Dhiman’s advocacy for women’s rights is unwavering. As an active member of the Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI), she continually pushes for greater representation and empowerment of women in the legal space.

Reminiscing about her journey, Dr. Dhiman recounted her tenure as a Member of the Board of Discipline at giBS. Her involvement with the Institution’s innovation council was marked by progressive initiatives and a forward-thinking approach. “Every role, every responsibility, has been a stepping stone, a learning opportunity,” she reflected.

As the sun began its descent, casting a golden hue over the VIPS campus, our conversation with Dr. Dhiman drew to a close. It was abundantly clear that her influence isn’t merely about shaping the future of law but also about pushing its boundaries, challenging conventions, and redefining its scope.

To encapsulate Dr. Ashu Dhiman in a mere interview is a daunting task. She is an institution in herself, a living testament to the profound impact one individual can have on the academic and practical realms of the legal world. As we made our way out of the serene VIPS-TC environment, one thought remained – the world of law is undoubtedly richer for having Dr. Dhiman as one of its guiding stars.
