External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi’s Tilak Vihar area on Thursday, providing them with assurance of support from the central government. The visit was part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) nationwide outreach program in preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and to mark nine years in government.
During the meeting, Jaishankar listened to the issues faced by the victims and assured them that their problems would be addressed. This gesture reaffirms the commitment of the central government to stand by the victims and work towards justice and redressal.
In addition to meeting the riot victims, Jaishankar also interacted with a student who had returned from war-torn Ukraine. The minister acknowledged the challenges faced by the student due to the situation in Ukraine and expressed the need for conducting exams in India to facilitate their education. He highlighted the support provided by the Indian Embassy in Ukraine during difficult times.
Addressing the concerns of Sikhs who had arrived in India from Afghanistan, Jaishankar affirmed the government’s assistance regarding citizenship and visas. He acknowledged the problems faced by some individuals in obtaining citizenship and assured them of all possible help. The minister emphasized the government’s responsibility to support and resolve the issues faced by those seeking citizenship and visas.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently filed a chargesheet in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, naming Congress leader Jagdish Tytler as an accused. The CBI’s action reflects efforts to bring justice and accountability for the heinous crimes committed during the riots.
The Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry, established in 2000 by the Government of India, was specifically tasked with investigating the incidents of anti-Sikh riots in 1984 in Delhi. The commission’s findings have played a crucial role in addressing the grievances of the victims and shedding light on the events of that period.
