An Air India flight, AI173, bound for San Francisco from Delhi, was forced to make an emergency landing in Magadan, Russia, due to an engine problem. As a result, 216 passengers and 16 crew members found themselves stranded in the remote town on Russia’s eastern coast. Air India has announced plans to send a replacement plane to ferry the stranded passengers back home.
The national carrier stated that a replacement flight, subject to necessary regulatory clearances, will depart from Mumbai at approximately 1 pm. It will carry essential supplies, including food, to ensure the well-being of the passengers during their extended stay. Limited infrastructure in and around Magadan has posed challenges, and passengers have been relocated to makeshift accommodations after attempts were made to arrange local hotel stays.
Given the unusual circumstances and the absence of Air India staff in Magadan or Russia, the airline has made every effort to provide the best possible ground support to the stranded passengers.
